In this response I talk a lot about using formative assessment to guide instruction, and during pre-internship I really got to see the value in doing this. I used formative assessment all the time! I didn’t think I would really know and be good at using it, but it actually came naturally to me, so I took advantage of it. I was constantly looking at what was working for students and what wasn’t and then I would take those observations to plan for the next day or week. I also found it helpful to have open discussions with my students on the ways they felt they learned best. I was surprised at how many students actually took up this opportunity to inform me of the ways they liked to learn and the activities they needed to do in order to help them understand something. I also found that differentiated instruction became easier when I got to know the students a bit more and also when the topic or lesson was really engaging.
