I think the topic of “the other” and peoples fear of the other, would be a great way to start inquiry based learning with students. In University we learn a lot of about “othering” and how many people have a fear of the other, but I am sure student’s are not aware of this. I think that it would be valuable to have discussions like this with students and to start having them challenge exactly what “the other” means. I also think it’s a great way to start exploring oppression and aim towards an anti-oppressive environment within the classroom. I had never really understood what oppression was until I was in University, I think a great article to have students read is “Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack”, written by Peggy McIntosh. After reading this article for the first time I really had a “uh huh” moment- I believe this article would be appropriate for high school students, I think it’s a huge eye opener and I think it would be a great starting point to examining discrimination and oppression.
